Had this post sent to me a while back but it got lost in the shuffle; with the hot weather, now’s a good time for the read. Billy Drum on Ice Cream trucks.
Well in the 60’s growing up on 16th street between 8th ave and 9th ave there was the ice cream trucks. Good humor, with the ice cream man John. With his fresh uniform; pearl white pants and shirts, hat and a money changer on his belt.
He would ask you what you want and play his harmonica, boy was that great. Ice cream and a show. Then there was Bungalow bar and Freezer fresh, his name was Louie.
And of course good old Mr Softie which is the only one who still comes around. Hope this will bring back some memories of the ice cream man!
Send in your strories if you’d like them posted on the blog!

Yeah, we called him uncle John. I think he had a moustache that went along with that white uniform. At the end of one particular summer he told us kids he was retiring and this was his last run, so for being such good customers he gave us each an ice cream ,no charge !

There are still some good ice cream men out there. The guy who comes to my block everynight gives my kids free candy everytime they buy ice cream. On his last run at the end of the year he gives them whatever he has left of their favorite for free. I guess we are good customers during the summer.

Let’s move off the ice cream trucks and onto the truck which housed the rides that would come by… Remember King Kong or the Whip…. I remember you got the ride and then candy or ice when you were done.

Remember the candy apple you’d get on the King Kong ride. Getting the candy apple was rare. The ride and candy apple for 25 cents. Those were the days!

I remember the old Good Humor trucks that would come down the street where the driver had to get out of the truck and open the side door in order to sell the ice creams. The whammy sticks were only 10 cents. I used to love the Bon-Joys and the ice cream sticks with the hard chocolate on the stick. The Toasted Almond and the Stawberry Shortcake were great too! I remember the driver would drive slow coming down the street and one day Michael Woodworth caught up to the truck on the side while riding his bike and somehow pryed the door open and a box of ice cream filled Sherman Street. The driver jammed on the breaks and the kids all ran!
Woody got a little but not the whole sha-bang. Good try though! LOL!

Wow, I remember Whammy Bars for 10 cents…and I especially remember “Bungalow Bar/Tastes like tar…” even tho I grew up in Little Neck, Queens, we sang it there too! So glad someone else remembers that! The Good Humor trucks were so sparkling clean and white back then; now these scuzzy trucks come around with all the brands stuck on them and some sloppy guy or gal inside (the one in our nabe smoked pot inside the truck a few years ago, you’d get a whiff along with your popsicle…)
