10th avenue, 11th avenue, 16th street, Bishop Ford High School, Brooklyn, Holy Name, Sherman street, Windsor Terrace, Xaverian High School

One lived on 16th street between 10th and 11th avenues and the other lived on Sherman Street between 10th and 11th avenues.  Just two short blocks away from each other.

Grew up together in the 70’s and 80’s.

Two good athletes, played multiple sports at Holy Name of Jesus grammar school.

One attended Xaverian High School, the other Bishop Ford.

Both went on to college; one went to Marist, the other to St. Francis of Brooklyn.

We all go our separate ways – some stay back.  Some move on.

In August of 2019, Sean Keating and Glenn Thomas bumped into each other on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Pretty cool…

Brooklyn, Dad, Father, Holy Name, Sherman street

Sad news to report.  John Thomas has passed away.  He was 93.

I spent a lot of time on Sherman Street – it’s where my best friend Glenn Thomas lived.  I always called his dad, “Mr. Thomas.”

John always made me feel good when he called me, “Son.’

Here’s Glenn’s announcement and tribute to his dad.

Last night the world lost a great man.   A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and simply a friend to so many. I simply called him my dad.

My father John Thomas passed away peacefully at the age of 93 in the comforts of his own home.  He and my mom were happily married for 65 years and were staples in Windsor Terrace and in Holy Name Parish.  My parents raised my brother, two sisters, and myself with very good values and a deep respect for all people.  It is a privilege to be able to live a long life for not many people are afforded this luxury and boy did my dad love life.

John Thomas

He was fortunate to make it home safe from seeing action for the US Army for the Elite 10th Mountain Division with The 87th Infantry Mountain Regiment in The Po Valley Campaign in Italy during WW2 and shortly thereafter went on to make a beautiful long life together with my mom here in Brooklyn, NY

Today, I make the choice not to mourn the loss of my dad but to smile and celebrate his long life, his humor, his kindness, and for being able to have him in my own life for so long.

I love you dad.

Friends, Peppermint Lounge

For the next few days I will be paying tribute to people I have known for a long time. People from the neighborhood that meant a lot to me growing up.  These people made a huge impact on me. From friends to teachers to coaches. I’ll even mention a couple of priests and nuns.

Glenn Thomas:

My best friend – we talk often, even text on a daily basis.

Growing up as kids Glenn and I played lots of ball together.  Holy Name schoolyard. P.S. 154’s, East 5th street and Manhattan Beach.

IMG_1588

Despite being a year older than me, Glenn and I hung out often.  We played together on the basketball team at Holy Name.  We also played pick-up ball everywhere there was a court.

We’d hop on our Mongoose mountain bikes and ride to Manhattan.  Over the Brooklyn Bridge up 6th avenue to West 4th street, Central Park, the Lower East Side; we covered a lot of ground.

“Hey Kid, you know how to ride a bike?”

When it was time to step out at night, we hung out in dance clubs all over the city. We danced, drank and met so many good people.

“YO FRANKIE!”

A classic line on the dance floor at the Limelight. Or maybe it was Xenon?

Cat Club. Studio 54. Peppermint Lounge. Danceteria. Boy-O-Boy, so many clubs…

“Do I know you?”

Glenn and I worked together as messengers down on Wall Street with our boy T-Bone.  A few years later we both worked the door at Planet Hollywood.

“Any advice for a struggling actor from Queens?”

“Yo Lance. Blue Fish…Blue Fish…”

One weekend we made a road trip York College in PA, it was a memorable one.

We played ball on Saturday afternoon against their players and went to a cool club later that night.

“You can’t get those Lima beans up that high…”

Knicks games at the Garden, Mets games at Shea and most important, spending time down his basement on Sherman Street listening to records.

The night Bernard King scored 60 points against the Nets we were both in the house. My guy Sugar dropped 36 that night for New Jersey leading the Nets to the win.

Glenn’s parents were gems; his mom treated me like a son. His dad was aces.

Speaking of aces, how about Frankie the Ace? We played so much ball down 154’s; basketball and stick-ball. We called it Swift.

Remember that bowling ball bag the Ace carried.

“Hey Jerry, there’s no tomorrow…”

Last but not least one day in August we were walking the boardwalk at Coney Island. All of a sudden we see Gerard Grayson on the sand, naked. Cops were hauling him off.

“YO FINAMORE, THEY TOOK MY CLOTHES!”

Hundreds of people on the boardwalk and he sees me…

SMH

To conclude, I miss those days of hanging out with Glenn. We had so much fun and learned a lot about friendships.

Yo Glenn, hope all is well.

Your friend,

Steve

I would like to extend my condolences to The Ryan Family.

Thomas Ryan, a Holy Name alum passed away yesterday from his injuries that he suffered from a recent fall while working construction on the Verazanno Narrows Bridge.

I didn’t know him well but remember him as him being referred to as “Roachie” growing up.

Schoolyard image

When I first started to play basketball at Holy Name in 1972-73, I remember as a 9 year old Danny Piselli put Steve Finamore and myself on Ryan’s team in the Holy Name  Summer League Little League.

I remember guys like Thomas Ryan, Joe Hurley, and the late Mike Routhier always treating us younger guys nicely as we were just starting out playing hoops.

May Thomas Ryan rest in peace.

-Glenn Thomas
