If you are wondering what W.I.N means, here you go.
I once read where Lou Holtz said, ‘What’s Important Now‘? That’s where the acronym comes from.
What’s important now never really pertained to me as a youngster growing up on ninth avenue. I didn’t subscribe to the notion of making sure things were the way they are supposed to be. We hung out, shot the breeze, listened to music and had a lot of fun.
I always thought basketball was the most important thing in my life. Heck, I wanted to play in the NBA! We spent a lot of time in the schoolyard playing but never really giving any thought to what was really important at the time. Wait let me go back, I’m sure a few of my friends were thinking about what was important, because while most of them were going home at a decent hour, I went back to the schoolyard to shoot. (But I must say, without my passion for the game, I probably would not be coaching at a Junior College).
As the years went by, and I matured, it dawned on me, “I better buckle down and start taking life a bit more serious”.
I soon realized, the game of life is the only game that really counts!
I once worked as an Ironworker and on one of the jobs I became friends with an awesome welder named Jerry Darlington. He was from Kingston, Jamaica and he had a real cool accent. Jerry was a real friendly guy and we always got around to talking about life while we moved his stuff from one point to another. One day he asked me, “Steve, do you really wanna do this shit for the next 35 years?” As he gave me a stern, serious look, one a father would give his son when trying to help him on his journey.
I didn’t have to give him a verbal answer. I just looked out to the sailboats going up and down the Hudson river. I thought to myself, “Hell no I don’t wanna do this for the next 35 years!”
So I went back to school, got my college degree and it’s been a great ride ever since.
Are you working at a job that you enjoy? Are you at a vocation because someone else wants you to do it or it’s all you can do?
What’s important to you? Your job, family, health, gambling, drinking, always having to be right in a conversation?
My friends, wife and daughter, basketball, this blog, my writing and my health are the main things I concentrate on each and every day.
Are you concentrating on what’s important now?
This morning I sat down at a coffee shop and ordered a coffee and a blueberry muffin; I’m not going to tell you how much the muffin cost either. I opened up my laptop and began to write.
If you’ve ever taken a bite out of a muffin, you know it is fluffy and sometimes can cause a major problem going down the pipe. You got cake stuck on the roof of your mouth and it sticks to the back of your teeth. So naturally H2o does the trick. Because your cup of coffee is just too hot at the moment.
Well a few months back this coffee joint I’m in used to have a big, iced cold container of water out for anyone who wanted to wet their whistle. After almost choking on the muffin, I was looking around for the water – nothing. I was thinking someone was going to have to give me the Heimlich!
I quickly got up and went straight to the counter and asked the nice lady for a cup of water. She filled up a plastic cup and handed it to me over the counter. After taking a gulp, I asked her, ‘what happened to the water that used to be over there’?
She looked at me and in her best library voice explained, “the owner didn’t want it out, she wants people to purchase the bottled water.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
Look, I’m not one to complain but c’mon, give me a break!
Oh yeah, BTW, the bottled water goes for a cool $2.00.
