For the first time in a very long time I was awakened by the wind last night. I tried everything to block it out but it seemed to get get worse and worse as the night went on. After checking with the weather bureau, Mother Nature was breathing down on us at 50 MPH!
I used to love my sleep-anyone who knows me pretty good knows how true that is; I hated to wake up in the morning! But now it seems as I get older, I sleep less and less. It’s not due to a medical condition, don’t worry…it’s just that I would rather be awake doing something instead of sleeping. I often feel sleep is overrated anyway.
Funny thing is when I get 8 hours sleep I feel groggy in the morning as opposed to say 4 hours, then I feel fresh in the A.M.
Plus, like someone once told me, “you can sleep when you’re dead”. Not sure if I like the sound of that.

On a different note, every now and then I will think back to how we lived as opposed to how kids live today. A few observations that were roaming through my head…
Did we have to put our seat belts on while we drove in a car?
Now they’re telling us we can’t hang anything from our rear view mirror. What, no Air Fresheners?
When I ride my bike with my daughter she puts her helmet on. I see others wearing helmets too. Did we ever wear helmets as kids? Did they even have them available?
Pay phones to cell phones. When we went out we made a call on the pay phone at the corner. Now you just pull out your cell.
We went out and ‘called for’ our friends. We organized stick ball games, whiffle ball, and even played tag. Now they have play dates. I know one family around here where the mother calls our house to see if Taylor wants to come over to play.
We hung out on the corner, schoolyard, park and never went home during the day. No one checked up on us. As long as we were home by dinner time. Do people still eat dinner as a family at 5:00PM?
When we ate something, did anyone count calories? Did we check the side labels for fat content?
Did they tell us to drink ‘x’ amount of water per day? 8 tall glasses to live a healthy life, right?
If you happened to get yelled at by a teacher or a coach (and believe me, I did get yelled at often) you didn’t go home and complain to your parents. Now kids go home and cry that they got yelled at so parents come up to school and complain that their kid got yelled at.
Which reminds me, when we got in trouble we got hit. Now, you get a timeout and sit alone for a few minutes in the corner.
Would love to hear from others about the differences in today’s youths and when we were growing up in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.
