Forget the back-to-back championships the Miami Heat just won.  (Don’t be shocked if they pull off a third, next season)

Happy 4th of July. I noticed one of the Kash family on the list. His brother Tommy was in my class. I hope the family is well.

I played on a summer league team with both Kashes… never saw two brothers such opposites..Tommy was working corrections.. hung out with him a few times.. and Gerald was a good player with a quick pull up. I think George was on that team too .. nice guy RIP

The older Kash was the first guy I saw wear ankle weights while playing ball in the yard.

    • Glenn Thomas says:

Tommy Kash is around and living in the neighborhood as is Gerard. Both are doing quite well.

Thanks for the update. Say hi to Tommy & his family for me; they were nice people.

Lots of fond memories of Gerard & his older brother Tom – do they still live on 16th St?

I was in between my junior and senior years in high school that summer in 1980. We never thought that our team would be any good but then we started to beat teams and the whole attitude changed from just “having fun” to becoming very competitive. I owe that mentality to Joe “Fonz” Farrell. What was a recreational neighborhood summer basketball league became very contentious to say the least. It definitely got heated but it was something for the locals to meet and do each night in which the neighborhood rallied around something positive. I miss those days with the rivalries. A lot of good people have since passed on. I miss those days a lot.

    • hoopscoach says:

Speaking to someone today they said, “you should come back to Brooklyn and start up the summer league again…”

      • Glenn Thomas says:

LOL! Neighborhood has changed so much. There would be a shortage of kids in the summer for most of them go away to the beach clubs and certainly not enough older guys that play pick up ball. It would probably be a safer bet to run a winter league in a gym for more people are around during this time.

  4. Dan Mahoney says:

Have a lot good memories from playing in the summer league. Tom McGrade, Tom Brady and Eddie Nichols were on that team too Played Team Ferro in the championship game. They were a fantastic team. Intense game. Remember Tommy Ferro and me were really going at it all night. Game goes to overtime, basket for basket by both teams until George Brossard drains both ends of a one and one. Game over! Still remember George Brossard telling me” Don’t worry Chief I got it covered!” before making them both!
