YOUNG HEARTS, RUN FREE

(Thanks to Gladys M. for another classic from the Mickey Breen Collection…)

Everywhere you turned, he was there. No matter which street you walked, he’d appear. He was like Houdini.

Joey Corrar was a favorite of mine. We had many conversations on sports. One memorable exchange took place on the avenue;  it was about the 1983 NCAA men’s basketball championship game later that night.  He was the only guy I knew that called NC State to beat Houston!

“HEY FINAMORE, WATCH VALVANO AND THE WOLFPACK TONIGHT!”

Those were his exact words the morning of the game as he stood on the corner of Windsor Place while I made my way across the avenue.

Like usual he tried to step in my path outside Red’s Shoe Store to get a response out me.

“Joey, I gotta go man…” I answered as I made my way to Rae and Otto’s for my New York Daily News.

Later that night, NC State beat Houston.

Joey had called it!

You’re right for Joey Corrar was the only one who gave the Cardiac Pack of NC State a chance against the U. of Houston. He was right!
