AT THE SPEED OF SOUND

Do you remember back in the day listening to music when hanging out with friends?

Music was a big part of my life growing up in the 70′s and 80′s.

Despite having a low self-esteem, whenever my favorite songs came on the radio, I felt a whole lot better.

Music powerfully influenced the emotions in my body. I’d play the air guitar or think I was Charlie Watts with the sticks.

Whether it was on the street corner, in the schoolyard, in Laura Cox’s apartment, Prospect Park, or better yet, with the one you loved; the sounds put us in a good mood.

My man Donato Barrucco of 16th street between 8th and 9th avenues was the first guy from my group of friends to own a ‘boom box’.

Donato had a job at United Meat Market delivering meats. He was promoted to working behind the counter where he sliced baloney. (How come when you walked in the butcher there was always saw dust on the floor?)

We listened to everything from rock-n-roll to disco. Most of my buddies were into rock bands like The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who and of course The Beatles.

I remember one night Donato didn’t have any ‘D’ batteries so we plugged his box into the street lamp-post courtesy of Con Edison of course.

Whenever your favorite song came on the radio or cassette, you asked Donato if you could hold the radio.

When ‘Brown Sugar’ by the Stones came on, John Cain and I went nuts. Cain was Jagger, I was Keith Richard. Know matter how many times I heard that song, I could never understand what Mick was saying; especially the beginning.

But there was nothing like sitting on the couch with that special person in your life at the time and listening to music.

One of my favorites from back in the day by Paul McCartney and Wings.

Respectfully,

Steve

Sawdust was on the floor to absorb meat juices… like all the bands you mention but “Sily Love Songs” I could not stand. Wings’ best song was
    “Maybe I amazed”…
As a basbketball fan/coach you would appreciate this,,, Darryl Dawkins complained the top of his right shoulder was a aching.. the trainer was puzzled until he saw Dawkins walking off the plane with his boombox on his right shoulder. The trainer instructed him to alternate shoulders!!!
it;s funny how we went for bigger boomer boxes and longer hair and the kids today are the opposite…… Have a great New Year, Steven..

Music is still an important part of my life- I can’t imagine life without it- gonna nitpick on JimmyVac there, Maybe I’m Amazed was not Wings, but Paul McCartney solo, but you are right about its being a great song! Happy New Year to all the Diary people, the posters and the readers! :)

Maureen, thanks for the correction. Can’t believe Vackner doesn’t like Silly Love Songs. It was so good, CBS used it during the NBA game of the week when going to a commercial.

    Mo,
When you google it,it comes up Wings… song is too soft like Ebony & Ivory…
except the Eddie Murphy-Joe Piscopo virgin… you were mentioned at our New Years party… perhaps a reality series in the works?? Steven, music is in the ear of the beholder…. Let’s all hope 2012 is the best yet.. Go Giants today!!!

Jim, I am old enough to remember when it came out- was on that first great McCartney solo album. And that should show you- you can’t believe everything you read on the internet, lol- watching my Saints roll against the Panthers now- good luck to all the Giant fans tonight- beat those Cowgirls!

When that McCartney solo album came out, I was hanging out on 18th St and 10th Ave at Sonny’s Bar. One of the guys in our crowd, “Kiggy” had a younger brother, Ernie. I think their last name was Conigliaro, they lived on 19th or 20th St. Ernie was really into music and was obsessed with that album. The family moved to Detroit and I HEARD Ernie died of an OD. I always liked that kid, and when I hear songs from that album, I always think of him

      That is wonderful…

This is what I was talking about it!

Hearing a song, and thinking back into time.

Thanks again, you are clearly the MVP of the Blog!

Just heard Hands Across The Water and thought bout Ernie (sigh)

  7. Donato Barrucco...aka Nocca!

We had to keep that saw dust fresh and clean by rakeing it multiple times a day. Those were some memorable days working at United for one of my mentors in life Tony Pinto. And yes, that Panasonic boomer sure did have many fingerprints on it. I can remember many times having to pry it out of some of our crews hands. I also had to make many trips on that 400lb steel delivery bike with the hard tires to pay for those D’s. Yours and John Cains rendition of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards was a mainstay of the night. I remember John Cain useing anything he can as a microphone slappin his lips like Jagger. Good times, good days sure did move at the speed of sound!

      WOW,

Donato, how the hell are you?

      Great to hear from you.

I really miss those days of hanging out, you made the nights much more enjoyable with your radio!

Thanks for reading and thanks for adding your comment.

Hope you and the family are doing well.

      Happy New Year to you.

      • Donato Barrucco

Doin pretty good Steve, thanks. I think about those days often and sometimes share stories of our adventures with my kids. I was recently turned onto the Container Diaries and I gotta tell ya, outstanding!!!! Hope things are well with you & yours and will stay in touch….Happy New Year!

        Donato,

You are right about Tony Pinto, good man. Remember Leo Ferrity? I was thinking of writing about him one of these days. He hung out in your place often…

      • Donato Barrucco

Yes I do. Good ole Leo Ferrity, he was a great guy. He was a fixture at United Meat Market and was there so much he should have pulled a salary…
