Is the fictitious character with the huge forearms on television anymore?
This morning I did a search on our cable box and nothing came up! (a search, isn’t that amazing how you can type a couple of letters in and come up with all the shows that are coming up in the future?)
As a youngster sitting on the living room floor in front of my T.V., I’d lose myself with the comical cast of characters that were before me. I’d dream of hanging with Popeye. Kicking it with Bluto and sharing a burger with Wimpy.
But Popeye was the best. I loved the way he would enunciate.
“I’m strong to the finish because I eat me spinach…”
How many times as a kid while at your dinner table did you hear, “Eat your spinach like Popeye and grow up to be big and strong!”
Umm, excuse me mom, but no matter how much spinach you forced down my throat, I was always skinny as a stick.

I wasn’t a big fan of Olive Oyl - I thought she was annoying and obnoxious.
I liked Bluto - he was cool. I loved the battles he had with Popeye. (What did he eat to get so big?)
Wimpy was cool too. Man could that dude down the burgers, huh? ‘I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday…’
My favorite episode was the the one with Ali Baba’s Forty Thieves.
“OPEN SEZ ME!”
Popeye took ‘em all on - counting each one of them as he knocked them out!

Popeye’s attitude, I YAM WHAT I YAM, is something I have been striving for a long time, I am closer now than ever. Just to be self-accepting, and not try to put on different personas to please others. There is a great freedom in that.
Mo,
When you stop trying to please everyone, that’s when your life begins. Trying to back everyone happy? It just will not happen.
Maureen so true about the freedom. That self acceptance is one of the keys to happiness. God made us to His Imagine and Likeness, each and everyone of us. Only when I accepted myself for who I am, was I able to start accepting others for whom they are!!! Concerning the self acceptance there are many things I may not like, or agree with, but its REALITY!!! Red also so true, life begins when we stop, pointing , blaming, and pleasing others, (visualize your hand extended and pointing at something, there are three fingers pointing back to ourselves)!!!!!!!!!!!!! The other freedom breaker Mo is FORGIVENESS. TO FORGIVE SOMEONE IS TO SET A PRISIONER FREE AND REALIZE YOU WERE THAT PRISIONER!!!!!!! What a FREEDOM!!! Thanks guys, Popeye I AM WHAT I AM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let’s not forget the second part of Popeye’s credo—I YAM WHAT I YAM AND THAT’S ALL’S I CAN BE! Rather than focus on why I didn’t get that at a young age, I will be grateful that I eventually did get it, better late than never. My favorite character was Wimpy, there was something endearing about that mooch! And what about Sweet Pea?
Coach, once again, props for coming up with a thought - provoking subject.
Too bad Olive Oyl was anorexic.. if she ate some of Wimpy’s burgers, maybe she’d “be all she can be!!”Bluto had anger management issues and he’ll be doing a crossover episode
with Dr. Phil. Wimpy is working with a personal trainer, Sweet Pea, like many child stars, could not find work as he got older.
Popeye is turning 90 and is due to arm wrestle Jack LaLane..
Popeye is still a hero to all of us that saw him get hiis *&** kicked by Bluto , ate his spinach, and beat the crap out of Bluto.
Bluto was probably on steroids, and Wimpy definitely needed financial counseling. Am I “misremembering” a la Roger Clemens, or was Bluto sometimes referred to as Brutus?
You maybe right. but who knows what was in that spinach?
I mean skinny arms, no teeth, bald, but foremarms like bowling ball? Come on!!!
I live in Northern Virginia now and have 3 children. My two young boys found Popeye on the Boomerang Network. Its basically a Hanna & Barbera channel with all the classics Popeye, Huckleberry Hound, Tom & Jerry etc…
CB,
Thanks for the heads-up! Take a picture of that game ball from Mussa’s team, we’d love to see it!
