I knew there was a reason why I never picked up a golf club or even set foot on a course in my 43 years on earth.
Thanks to Container Diaries contributer Jimmy V, I have learned of a disturbing situation involving our parish and a golf course, Dyker Beach Golf Course. Denis Hamill of the New York Daily News wrote about it last week in his column.
“And every year for the past 13 years on the first Thursday of June we’ve held a golf outing at Dyker in honor of Eddie Farrell, who used to own Farrell’s,” says Houlie. “The Boy ScoutsBreezy Point pitch and putt because Dyker got greedy with our little religious charity.” volunteer to cook and clean up at a barbecue in the schoolyard after the golf outing. The proceeds, around $15,000, go to Holy Name. This year, the Dyker Golf people priced us right off the course. For the first time, we’re forced to leave Brooklyn and go to Breezy Point pitch and putt because Dyker got greedy with our little religious charity.”
So much for human compassion huh?
Coach,
I’ll confess to enjoying the game of golf. I just came back from a four day trip to Myrtle Beach with 15 friends. It is a great way to decompress and blow off some steam.
As for Dyker, as far back as I can remember this place has always been a very shady run operation. Several of us used to get tee times there and almost without fail every time we’d appear at the first tee there would be several other groups ahead of us many of which did not have a reservation. The place was a dump, was fixed up and now it spurns those who would fill up their day without them breaking a sweat.
Jim V. please let Mike C. know there are several nice reasonably priced courses in Monmouth County that would gladly welcome you guys with open arms. If he is interested in speaking to any of these let me know. I realize that playing in NJ adds an expense but it might entice some of those transplanted Brooklynites to join in the fun.
As for Byker, someone from the City ought to take a look at Un-American Golf’s lease. Perhaps the city should try and take the course back and lease it to someone based in NYC thereby keeping the money in the city.
JC,
I hear ya on he stress thing but I can name a hundred things that relieve the stress .
Here’s all you need to know about golf; it’s the only sport where you hit a ball, and walk after it!
Golf is the fourth most popular sport in the world and everyone can play. The only thing that gets in the way of great golf is the mind.Real golfers know that golf is not just a sport, but it is a way of living
Trust me it’s no big loss, the Vinny Brunton Golf Outing is much better than the HN outing which is played in Breezy Point. Not because it’s cheaper, because the venue is better. This is a blessing in disquise for HN. I just hope they barbeque @ Fort Tilden like they do @ Vinny’s outing. The treck back to the neighborhood would stink.
Anybody remember when Mike Trapp worked there? I think he had something to do with the starts.
Jerry,
As Jed Clampett said,” Them golf must be tough critters, first you shoot ‘em then ya gots to club them to death in that little hole!!”
What ticks me off is that many people in the neighborhood played at Dyker when it was horrible…
here is a public course funded with tax dollars not giving the neighborhood a break..
FYI: There also a steak dinner at HN for about 35.00 a head in 6/5…
Jerry,
Vinny had to go to Arizona for 5 days of golf. Next week he’s off to Memphis for 3 days. Don’t you wish you had a tough job like him? He lives a charmed life.
Helen
Yo Rnopporn,
You better reexamine your research. The 4th most popular? Says who?
And you are wrong, not everyone can play.
Helen, that’s nice. I haven’t played golf @a work related function in ages.
Coach, an oldtimer I worked with was fond of saying that a bad day of golf is much better than a good day at work.
JV, maybe we can make it in for the June event. I’ll have to get a look at the calendar and see what we already have etched in stone though.
Same here.. I may have a work related conflict but I just wanted to mention it to anyone interested.
Golf, I don’t get it…you can’t play it in the street, so we never learned; kinda like tennis, skiing, etc…
Remember playing ball in the street and claiming a fire pump or lamp post for 1st and 3rd? Pity the poor sucker who tried to park on or near the base. We’d argue with them and tell them they couldn’t park there it was our street.
Anyhow, yeah, greed sucks…but that’s what happens when outsiders come along and take over. Only interest is in the almighty dollar. Too bad.
Jed Clampett made that very quote less than a week ago on TV Land. Talk about our past, huh?
