Happy Easter to all.
This afternoon my daughter went with a friend to an Easter-egg hunt.
I’m not so sure we had one of those?
Oh wait, actually my mother use to hide the eggs around our apartment on Easter morning and we’d look around the place clutching our empty straw basket with one hand and moving things around with the other to try and find them.
The night before I watched my mother boil them and then we colored them. As we slept through the night she hid them. (or maybe she hid them in the morning?)
But, as for actually hunting for Easter eggs outside, I don’t recall that. (Was there an Easter egg hunt in the lot on Windsor Place? What about Prospect Park?)
Easter Sunday was a lot of fun. Not only would you color eggs at night and then hunt for them the following morning but in addition you’d get an Easter basket filled with delicious chocolate treats, jelly beans and of course the sweet tasting chocolate marshmallow.
At a young age I didn’t know much about chocolate except that it tasted good and gave you a belly ache if you consumed too much in one sitting. While my daughter was going through her basket of treats, she grabbed a piece of candy, looked at it and said, “Wow mommy, this is expensive.”
The candy of choice was Truffles. How did she know that it was expensive?
Like I said before, I don’t know much about chocolate; give me a Hershey bar, kisses, or even M&M’s and I’m happy.
So of course out of curiosity (and hearing her mention the value of the candy), I had to inspect the contents inside the basket. Upon further review, I noticed something that was always a concern of mine when I was given an Easter basket; the chocolate bunny.
Was it hollow or solid?
When you received the hollow one, you may of been a bit disappointed. As soon as you bit into it, half the thing collapsed and all the pieces fell down to the bottom.
With the solid bunny you dug your teeth into it and shaved off the chocolate. (By the next morning your mother might’ve made an appointment with the dentist)
On the other hand, with the solid bunny, usually that structure lasted a day or two - the hollow one, it was gone rather quickly.
Let’s not forget about dressing up and attending church on Easter morning.
The shined shoes, pressed trousers and of course buttoned down dress shirt. (I actually wore white tube socks one year)
The girls with their pretty dresses and shoes, plus a cute bow/ribbon laced through their hair.
We sat through the extra long mass; left the house of worship and as soon as we got home, we changed into our jeans and sneakers and went to the schoolyard to play basketball.
It’s mid-afternoon and I’m all alone writing this blog entry. My daughter is still out at the egg hunt; I’m watching the NCAA basketball tournament. Over my right shoulder is Taylor’s basket filled with candy, practically untouched - miracle, right?
I’m wondering if she’ll know I made a dent in her solid bunny?
Happy Easter to all!
