Reading the Container Diaries blog often brings back many memories for a lot of people. I have received some outstanding e-mails from folks expressing their pleasure of going/thinking back in time. Our visitors range in all different age groups - so some people will have different memories than others.
Every now and then I’ll think back to a few things that happened in my life and some odd memories pop in my head. This morning I was thinking about Soap Opera’s.
Do people still watch them?
Are they still on television?
I recall my Great Grandmother whom everyone called “Mom” (we treated her like she was our Grandmother though…long story) - always having them on when we would go and visit her on 14 street between 4th and 5th avenue. It was usually a family visit each week.

Remember the opening voiceover? “Like sands through the hour glass, so are the days of our lives…”
That was mostly all I recall. The opening theme of the show. It seemed like we were always walking through the front door and on cue that’s all you heard coming from the living room.
I don’t recall any plots, episodes or even cast members from the show.
I just remember the hourglass and the opening theme song.
As The World Turns was another popular show that would always be on too. Then of course there was General Hospital.
Not sure if this blog entry is of interest to anyone but I wanted to throw this subject out there to see if anyone had memories of Soap Opera’s and if they did, why don’t you share them.
There was the soap opera of 1976 through 1981 when George Steinbrenner (the bad guy) picked on everyone in sight, Billy Martin, Dick Howser, Bob Lemon, just t0 name a few. There were feuding divas Munson and Jackson..good guys, Catfish, Gosse, Chambliss, hot blooded lunatics like Pinella, and riverboat gamblers like Mick The Quick Rivers who played demolition derby in the Yankee parking lot with his wife. They won four pennants and two WS.
As a Met Fan grieving over the loss of Seaver and watching some terrible baseball, I called this daily turmoil, “AS THE STOMACH RUMBLES”
HAHA! Good one, Vackner! You are quite a comedian!!!
I wouldn’t say that I personally have a memory of a soap, but I always remember coming home from school and my sister would be sitting on the couch watching General Hospital. She always seemed so enamored about her soaps. I would then try to ask her questions trying to follow along, which I never could.
I vaguely remember her watching a soap about some doll and a witch (Tabatha I think), and the doll would come to life sometimes.
Anyways, it all seemed very strange to me, I never really understood the concepts I guess.
My bride of 26 years MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE every night from 8-10 Once Baseball starts, it’s gone. she can wathc the whole week which is repeated on the weekends. I either go to the gym , read, or go on the internet. Sometimes, I make comments such as “how many timec can you come back from the dead” and is’nt that his sister he’s sleeing with?”
“when are they gonna kill that one off?” . Her resonses are eye rolls or threats of violence which make for better dialogue than the crap that’s on the idiot box (as the elders called it).
In the 50″s comming home for lunch from Holy Name, I remenber my mom watching the soaps and I belive at that time they were 15 min segments.
BETTY,
15 MINUTE SEGMENTS.. GOOD OLD DAYS.
