Congratulations to the Giants for kicking ass on Sunday. As you know, there are a lot of die-hard New York Giants fans from Farrell’s!

BT:
Gerry and Jerry, those were the days, how about when we had class against Class with intramurals, Football and Basketball in the School yard. Do you recall the Co-Op Bowl? Football game between the two classes taking the Co-Ops. There was a lot of trash talking going on before those Games. Always a lot of fun when an under class beat the older class. Great touch football games in that school yard. I think it was six on six…
Bt is correct. There were some awesome games being played. I’m not sure if they still play touch football anymore in the schoolyard? Or anywhere for that matter…
Tom Purdy:
It is great to see that after his passing 19 years ago so many people still celebrate the life of John Devaney. It is hard to forget someone that has had an impact on so many lives. As always a special thanks needs to go out to Bill Kahaly for another job well done… It is an honor to John that his Good friend will always keep his memory alive…This is what the people of Holy Name are all about…
Maureen Corrigan:
It’s amazing how a simple photo can evoke so many memories. In this photo is the back of the convent, where the kitchen was located. I remember Cookie (as all the convent cooks were called) calling me in as I rushed from Mass to class…scolding me for not having had breakfast (remember fasting from midnight in order to receive Communion?) The dear old nun would pour me a big glass of milk and accompany it with an oatmeal cookie. They really loved us.
Liz Sabbagh:
Ahhh…..I remember the way Otto greeted people ….”Hello Dahling! Hello Gorgeous!” Now it’s “Hello Love. Thank You Love.”
WOW! To speak of ‘Otto’, the significant other of Ray! (or was it Rae?)
I wonder if Otto played basketball back in the day? How tall would you say he stood, 6′7″?
I never really had an intelligent conversation with him. For some reason he always kept a close eye on me as soon as I entered this candy euphoria. I would stare at the sweetened treats for what seemed like an hour, coin(s) in hand. Always taking a bit longer to choose than everyone else. (Now I understand why my 8 year-old takes forever to choose something; Indecisiveness is heredity). Otto would also counter with some coins of his own in his paw and he’d always have one eye on me, one eye roaming the store.
“C’mon Sonny, make up your mind…”

Rae and Otto were usually nice but they could rush you if you took too long or were looking at certain magazines too long without blinking and your mouth open.
I got along with them pretty well. I would go in there the first week of the month and buy Spiderman, Fantastic Four, Green Lantern (Beware my power Green Lantern’s light) and others. Then have my eggcream or shake made by Millie or Marion.
Otto was about 6′3-6′4. Their son Stuart was about 6′7″. He was built just like his father and then he dropped about 100 pounds. Sad what happended to him later.
Thanks for the clarification on the heights of both Berger’s.
that used to be called hippie hill it was a big hang out in the 60s
Anybody got the guts to write about the happenings on Hippie Hill?
Carol,
Denis Hamill wrote a novel called,”Long Time Gone” about a murder on
Hippie Hill in 1969. Anyone remeber the headshop by the circle ?

Ahh…. the head shop, incence ,blacklights ,posters and more, with Hendrix playing in the backround. A small slice of the East Village without having to get on the F train. I think it was formerly the law office of Rollo Mayo.
Far out! I like remember that place on the Circle and Fifteenth Street. It was like so grooovey, man. In Gadda da vida, baby, you know that I looove you…….Lucy in the sky with diamonds, Lucy in the sky with diamonds AHHHHHHHHH. The purple haze decends………
I remember buying incense there when I was a kid.The
guy behind the counter has long hair. pink glasses, and
was wearing a multi color dashiki. As Carol said,”GROOVEY
MAN”. Ya always saw the “hippie hill” residents in there buying
rolling paper.
i think that was the first outside drug store n was open late
Jim V Thanks for the info about Dennis Hamill’s book on Hippie Hill. I will try and track it down.
Anytime.. Your best best is the library.. it’s at least 5 years old.
Anybody remember Rae telling us she was gonna tell Msgr. that we were teasing Stewie? Lunchtime pretzels and Violets? And getting killed for eating candy in school in the afternoon?
OOhh, violet candies! They were rather strange tasting. Wonder what was in them?
I remember everyone would go in to Ray & Otto’s either at lunchtime and at 3:00 in droves, and there would be so many kids in there that Ray & Otto would follow kids around to make sure they didn’t put any candy in their pockets. If you took
to long choosing something, Otto would try to rush you and mumble “go to hell, dolly” under his breath.
