Ok sounds good. I feel for your loss.
Please don’t forget Albert Plantamura and Donny Rice who both died in their 30’s,. I played in the streets wiith these two guys especially Donny.
He was my best friend growing up and we used to sit by our window sills and talk about that day, and what we’re doin tomorrow.
RIP
Yes, good call Vack. I forgot about Albert – what a great pitcher he was for HN. Mussa threw him like every game! The guy’s left arm was a machine!
I have fond childhood memories of Kenny Dolan growing up.Ken and I were huge Met fans in the 70’s.We used to Meet on the Corner of Windsor and 10th by his house and set off to Shea for the day.Watch the likes of Craig Swan,Pat Zachary,Eddie KranePool,Ray Burris,Richie Hebner and the like collectively ruin our day.We used cut the coupons off the Dellwood Milk carton and sit in the Bleechers for like Two Bucks.Kenny Dolan a beautiful spirit that is still with us.
BL,
Great memory. Man o man, those Milk carton coupons were the best. I would dump the milk out and put it in a container just to cut the coupon off.
Good to hear from you…
Karen Bullock, a vivacious and funny girl! She was one of the best swimmers on St Joseph’s High School Swim team. She always had plenty of friends around because she was a blast to be around.
I was so surprised to see nu nu sabbath had passed away. When I was about 17 i dated her for awhile. What a nice girl and good family She will be missd
A few good people that you missed Billy Routhier, charlie raymound. Jerry Brown, Al colura they are all missed but not forgotten always in my memories. I spent alot of time with Joe sullivan and have many good memories hanging out with him. I was so surprised to see nu nu sabbath I once dated her many years ago and she was such a nice girl from a good family,Does anyone know what happened to her and when
Bill,
Joe Sullivan was a funny dude. He always had me in stitches! I remember watching a softball game down P.S. 154 and he was on the field. Someone, who’s name I can’t remember was riding his bike through the field, annoying everyone. This guy had a tank-top on and it was clearly visible he spent time in the weight room. Out of know where, Sully yells out, “Yo muscle-head, get off the field!”
Cancer struck Nu-Nu at too early of an age.
God Bless everyone one of them:
Jimmy kennedy- A Friend we all admired.
Thomas Ferriola
Billy Murray- Probably one of Holy Names Best Athletes we never Knew
Artie Snyder
Louie Gene
“Little Wally” The Best Foul Shooter int the School Yard-
Eddie Farrell- The Best Giant Fan around…
The neighborhood had some wonderful people who passed and are dearly missed.
I’m thankful for the website because it brings back memories of those that are gone.. Like I remember spearing Donnie Rice with a fish hook when we went fishing in Prospect Park Lake.
s Or bending over the 6th row first seat when I did/said something dumb,
a teacher usually Gillen was giving me the board (of education) and facing my cousin Drew Thomas(who never got in trouble) and he’d be looking at me trying not to laugh while I ‘m getting my butt whacked…
Gillen turned out to be a solid college basketball coach . Tough times at Virginia, in a very tough league. I think he will be back.
While watching the New York Football Giants play this weekend with members of the Farrells sports Club.We all recollected on our favorite guy from Windsor Terrace.A life long Giants fan Tony Pinto.Tony is missed by so many of us for the wholesome goodness in which he lived his life, a true inspiration to all that knew and loved him.Tony be our 12th man against the Pat’s and help us bring the championship home.
Just found this blog, thanks to Jerry Toranto & Mickey Mickolajczak (yeah I know how to spell it). I have been out of touch with old friends but it hit’s home to see so many names of people who have passed.
It figures Gerarld would be in contact with Alex Batista and Mickey mickolajczak (youve been practicing havent you Alex) Wow two great names to see and hear about. memories
…also don’t forget Robert McKenna. All who knew him loved him.
He married REgina Welkne from the neighborhood and lived in N.J. He passed 8 years ago
So many more…Remember Pat Young, John Raimondo, Tony Coppa, Laurel Decker, Carmelo Rodriquez..Also Christine Amitrano, and Donna Piselli…All too young to die..When we hung out we took life for granted, thinking everyone would grow old together..how sad! Pictures and good memories are all we have.
Whoa…my cousin sent me this website and boy does it bring back memories of Holy Name. JImmy Maloney was my second cousin, Frankie Caputo and George Brossard were my buddies and neighbors on 11th Avenue, and I played hoop with Mike Rauthier and Joe Farrell. Unbelievable – I lost touch w/Caputo and Brossard as I move away from Brooklyn in 1970…but I could write a book and all the stuff we did from 1967-1970. Thanks for setting this up. Holy Name ever have reunions?…it’d be nice to see people still alive. Is Charlie Alberti out there?
Larry,
Glad to see you made it. Frankie Caputo reads the blog on a regular basis; I’m sure he’ll see your post. Last I heard, Charlie is doing well. I saw him at a Ford outing a couple of years ago. What an incredible athlete, huh?
LARRY HOLY NAME HAD A REUNION ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO AT BISHOP FORD AND THERE WAS ABOUT 1500 PEOPLE AND WHAT A BLAST. THEY HAVE MANY FUNDRAISERS AND REUNIONS, SO IF YOU WANT GET ME YOU EMAIL OR ADDRESS AND ILL GET IT TO PEOPLE ON THE COMMITTE AND WHEN THINGS ARE PLANNED AND TO HAPPEN THEY WILL SEND THAT INFORMAION OUT TO YOU. YOU WILL BE KEPT UP ON THE ACTIVITIES. THEY ALSO HAD A CRUISE LAST YEAR WITH MANY PEOPLE AND I HEARD IT WAS GREAT ALSO.
Seeing Billy Murray’s name on this site brings me back to the night of his accident.
I’ll never forget his smile or his jump shot, he was a great athlete and a great friend. RIP Billy.
JOE yes Billy Murray, I remenber him as a young girl, when he worked for Associated or key food one of those stores, and making deliveries, so handsome and a real nice young man, and such a tragedy. Yes he was very talented and a great athlete. Saw his brother Ken (I belive) at the reunion and I mentioned his brother billy to him and he lit up. Nice to not forget the ones that have gone before us!!! Thanks once again for that memory!
Joe Marsillo, I never forget the day Billy Murray had his accident. I was a liitle kid at the time and Billy would always throw me into his delivery wagon, I am not sure if he worked for Key Food or Asscoiated… I am going to guess Key Food, He always took me on his deliveries, This Particular Day he said to me as weird as this sounds… I can’t take you today, bobby, and he put his hand out and I shook his hand as to say good-bye. I think it was a Friday..That evening my sister, kathleen, came up to me and told me what had happen to Billy, it really stayed with me for a long time.. I know I was very young but alot of always looked up to the older guys and I really wish some of the older guys would talk about the Billy Murrays of the Parish and tell how good of a Person and an athelete he was. I would bet you very few of the guys writting in ever heard any of the Good old Stories….. I remember going to his Funeral and seeing alot of trophies from all his acomplishments…. I know he was a Great Guy…..
Plesae don’t forget MATTHEW LAYDEN, who in holyname, hung out with all the knuckleheads, became a concert pianist, and was one of the big track stars in holyname, and in bishop ford
i have to add 3 names to the list of good neighborhood guys that aren’t with us anymore ( maybe they were mentioned previously and i missed that )– Bobby (bibba) Beresford, Billy Leaver and a very close friend of mine–Keith Carlson.
Wow, I don’t know some of the names above and some I didn’t know had passed away. In the interests of brevity I’ll try and be short and concise..
for some short could be reall long.
John Devaney – I’ll always remember that look – the one he’d give you if you disappointed him or you didn’t give a good effort. I can still hear him say ” You gotta do the right thing.” He sure did.
Captain Vinnie Brunton – A fine man in every sense. quiet confidence, some of the tributes I’ve read really paint him as he was. I have his picture on a corkboard at the office, “reminding me to stay calm keep it simple and think on my feet.”
Jimmy Riches – Another special guy gone far too young, I wish I gotten to know him better. Always missed.
Peter Vega – My buddy. way too much to scratch the surface here, a good friend. I think of him every day and on the good days I wish he was there.
Sometimes I’ll have too much fun or one extra for him, he enjoyed it all.
Mr. Ed Cush – I was asked how I had known him and my answer was he was one of our guys at Farrells…a greaat many have him to thank for their careers, homes & families. A true patriot.
Donald Lever – He could say a whole lot with a “how ya doin!” Never did any harm that I know of and is also much missed by family & friends.
Big Joe Sabbagh – A traditional salute is always dome for Joe when one of his friends plays the “Summer Wind” on a jukebox. Gruff outside, kind hearted.
Joe Farrell – “Fonzie!” – Art Kearney sez hello. the other bar just ain’t the same without him. much loved & missed
Joe “Sully” Sullivan – I still hear all sorts of stories about the guy. I was some years younger so after football he’d suggest it was time for me to go. He was right. Recently referred to as “one of the toughest guys around” he wasn’t afraid to mix it up where & whenever.
Big Frank Caputo – A founding member of the Fathers Guild. I’d see him often after he’d coach a little league game & we’d catch up. What a kind man.
Eloy Mirahle – We had a running joke where he’d call me Louis. In a scrap he was the first guy to be with you. Hope he’s found peace finally.
Pat Young – I just thought of him last January pretty sure he’s gone since 87. He’d grow a beard in a week. good talker, I learned alot chatting with him.
Laurel Decker – She always had a big smile for everyone. Knocked me flat when Scott Norwoods kick went wide right. Huge Giants fan. I’m sure she’s smiling about Eli & this years team.
They’re all gone too soon but thay still live in our hearts, all those people.
When we do what we do to make it through the days & weeks of our lives weh honor their memories. Like the prayer cards say ” It was heaven here with them.”
Told ya I’d have trouble keeping it short…”Sue me if I’ve played too long.”
Alex,
There is no “c” before the k in my name and Gerry starts with “G” for Gerald. You’re getting better, though! Just wanted to say hi to all and I really get a kick out of reading this blog.
Hi Betty! Can I still get a basketball from your basement stairs on Howard Place? Weren’t all the school yard balls stashed there?
Thanks for having my dad on here. That’s a nice honor.
Donny Rice is my aunt’s brother and was a big part of my life growing up..it’s nice to hear you speak of him here, thanks.
I would like to add my dad, Phil Volastro, who taught at HN a long time ago. He passed away in August 2000, much too early for all of us. As I have written on other pages of the blog I would love to hear from people who had him as a teacher and some good ‘ol stories. It would be great to share them with my mom, Madelyn (Kondek), who also taught at HN. They met teaching.
Thx all.
Eddie Mc Grath did alot for the Holy Name Fathers Guild. AnneMarie, its sad alot of People don’t even know that but there are alot of people who do. So you can be very proud of your Dad he was a Great Man who cared about the neighborhood.
Hey, BT, I don’t know who you are, but thank you so much. How kind of you to say that…..My father did a lot of good that I only found out about at his wake and funeral. It amazed his brothers to see the people that came and told them the things my father did for them…..I’m glad to hear he did things when he could for those he could. Thanks, again.
Joseph McGivney…..
Annemarie, the funny thing was that when I was growing up your dad was always a Guy who would begin an argument and leave us to debate it, needless to say we nicknamed him : The Arguer” it was a funny thing we all had a lot of fun with. It was very harmless. But Later on your Dad and I and a Few other Guys got together and Started the “Holy Name Fathers Guild” Thats when I really got to see your Dad at work. The time he spent in doing for the Kids in our Neighborhood was unbelievable…Very Committed to what we wanted to accomplish… Great Guy….
An old friend turned me on to this website, does anybody remember my good friend Rudy K. ? I grew up on 13th street between 8th and 9th ave. spent many saturdays at sanders movie theater, saw many movies such as karate flicks and the exorcist etc… hung out in ps 107 school yard, sleigh riding at prospect park, then went to is88 john jay highschool, i remember slick and lala scared me to death, is sean riley did he used to hang out with bozo and kevin avlerizez who died on 8th ave sorry to say, i worked in C and S meat market on 7th ave and 8th street i used to deliver meat on the heavy bicycle. i also played football for st. savior church in early 70’s peewee league, does anybody remember the pool hall they opened on parkside circle?
i am enjoying reading your website. it brings back alot of fond memories. i was just reading “in memory of”, we lost alot of lovely friends and neighbors. I would like you all to remember my beautiful brother Peter Heaney 1962-1997. He loved Holy Name and all his friends in the neighborhood. He was one of the nicest people i ever knew and i still miss him so much. Thank you. Sorry I’m not very computer literate. ann
here are just a few names of people gone way too early
Al Colurra
Anne Cronin
Carl Valentino
Billy Campbell
Joseph Campbell
Ernie Conigliaro
I remember Al Colurra, he was the first young person I knew who died, he was always in our apartment, he was my
younger sister’s first boyfriend for a while. I still remember the lines at Duffy’s and the absolute grief and pain. I thought dying was reserved for old people, judging from all the posts here, I was sadly misguided.
Ann,
Your so right in describing you brother Peter as one of the nicest people , Peter was a great guy, he had class, being a former Farrells bartender for roughly 17yrs I got to know him pretty well and always remember him as a gentleman who liked to have a good time, he enjoyed his very many friends. We all miss him.
Also remembering Eugene DiBenedetto who was only 21 when he died in a motorcycle accident. Such a good soul. Way too young to die.

I’m guessing that BT is Bobby Trapp…..Thanks for the nice words about my Dad, BT. The Holy Name Fathers’ Guild did a lot of wonderful things for the kids and families in the neighborhood back then…..Bobby Trapp, my dad, Tony Pinto, Eddie Cush, Joe Gallagher, Jim Galvin, Jimmy Maloney, Jim Shashaty, Roger Swanson, Joe Heegan and many, many, many, many, many others–I know I am leaving out tons of names, because many, many fathers (and mothers and sons and daughters, brothers and sisters) did their part, but God bless every one of them.
I remember my dad kept a box of index cards from the first couple of years of the Fathers’ Guild for the baseball teams, each player, the coaches, the team assignments, etc….It was cool. I helped him keep them in order, and even had some fun with John Toner coaching kids like Eric Swanson & Danny Sturges on one of those Fathers’ Guild teams….There also used to be a nice little Koffee Klatch that Joe G and my dad, and I am sure, others, used to set up on Sunday mornings for people to chat and have coffee, tea and pastries after Mass……very cool……..(then some of us would head off to the CYO camp at Coney Island for a swim and some slapball…………)…………….
Steve, thanks for this wonderful website. It warms my heart to read everyone’s memories of the old days.
For me, Sherman Street, Windsor Place and 10th Avenue were the best…..A shout-out to Paddy Larkin, Glenn Thomas, Matt Bullock, Chrissie Brennan, Mike Hanratty, the Dolans, the Mastrandreas, the Purdies (especially you, Mike!) & Jimmy Cacace….I couldn’t have asked for a better “small town” to grow up in……….(Keep those “diaries” coming!!!!)
Also wanted to add these names:
my uncle, Pete Fox
my uncle, John Mc Hugh
my great aunt, Kay Carney
my grandma, Marie “Sis” Fox
my grandpa, Steve Fox &
John Cox & Tom & Betty Gilfillen, the best neighbors you could ask for on Windsor Place…..
I miss them all
Hey, Eddie. I hadn’t realized you were on here…nice to see you. Good for you to remember our relatives……you’re making me cry. OMG Mr. Cox and Mr. and Mrs. Gilfillen.
BT, ah, Bobby Trapp. Thanks for your really kind words about my dad. I hadn’t read that last time. I get lost sometimes trying to remember where I last posted. (I talk a lot, any idea where I may have gotten that from??)
The Arguer. LOL!!! My second son is the same. OMG he drives me crazy. No matter what, he’s arguing and then, YES, he walks off and leaves the rest of us debating it.
The Arguer. I love it.
I liked Peter Heany a lot. Sorry for your loss.
Billy Campbell??
WE FORGOT, SEAN MCELDOWNEY, HE WAS FROM 16 ST BETWEEN 8 TH AND 9 TH AVE, KERRYS HIS SISTER. HE S BEEN MISSED, PEACE ,,,,,,,,,,,,,JOHNNY FIN
I recentley discovered this web-site. I read a lot of great memories and viewed some great pictures. I e-mailed my sister Eileen and brother Gerard (Carella) because they appear is some photos and text.
Unfortunately it is sad that some friends and loved ones have already passed on to the list “In Memory Of”.
So I bow my head and say a prayer in respect for our lost friends and family…and add one more.
JOSEPH CARELLA
I would like to add my sister Rosanne Lang who passes on September 11,2001. She never forgot where she came from and loved her old neighborhood.
In memory of my cousin Jimmy Kennedy, a giant among men. RIP
Annemarie you asked about billy Campbell, hes a good friend of mine, he moved from Windsor and lives down by church ave, I dont know exactly but I have been there only once. Hes a great gentleman, who did right by his mom Millie CAmpbell, to the end and what a guy. Carellas nice to see you guys especially Clare who I did see maybe two yrs ago at Bobbys Christmas Party, and it was so nice seeing her. I went to school with Doris who was a real special Lady also. Gerard Lang, yes that was so sorry about your sister Roseann and your newphew on 9/11 my heart went out to your family, cuz my best to all especially your mom and dad. Now we have to add to the list Danny Mills who on 10 17 08 (about that) passed away and what a great, funny and a real special guy. He always made people feel SPECIAL and like Braodway said HES A STAND UP GUY, AND BOBBY SAID HES LIKE ‘POETRY IN MOTION’ AND THOSE TWO THINGS REALLY DESCRIBE DANNY MILLS TO ME.
Clare, I’m sorry to hear about Joe. I went to school with him. I was also good friends with Gerard, we hung out quite alot together. Gerard was also a good friend of my brother Glenn. Didn’t you live on 16th street between 7th& 8th aves. when you talk to Gerard, tell him Gary Cooper said hello. My brother Glenn is also gone. He passed about 9 years ago. Take care.
We have to remember Steven Foster, Pat Young and Tommy Patino.
Hi Everyone,
I moved from NY some time ago and would like to know what happened to Donnie Rice. Can anyone tell me?
Also, my firend Susan who spoke at Joey Corrar’s Funeral (?)/Memorial, (sorry I don’t remember), would like to get in contact with Joey’s sister. Does anyone know how I can help them connect?
Sally
I would like to add my father Anthony Pinto (United meat Market)
Sorry for not getting on the site earlier. I would like to add my Brother Brian’s name to the others. Dennis Hamill wrote a great article about the Bishop Ford/Holy Name reunion a few years ago. He stated that during that same weekend, there was a royal wedding taking place over in England , but that the true royalty of the world was represented that night at the reunion. As I read the different notes from all the people who grew up in the neighborhood, I do consider myself very fortunate to have lived there.
